Yes, he is. He can demand a very large contract considering what Crawford just signed for.

He wouldn't be the automatic starter for the Americans. Quick won a cup standing on his head and last time I checked, Lunquist hasn't even brought a team to the finals yet.

"Look at this way....Were Lundqvist an American or Canadian he would be the starting goalie for either squad in the Olympics..there really isn't much of a question about that.."

There isn't?

Not on the Canadian team anyway. The American team is another story however.

Maybe he will go to Detroit to play with Team Sweden. Don't forget that with Alfredsson, the decision wasn't just about the money.

For me, one of the keys and why I am not that worried as a Rangers fan and blogger on this site for the team were the remarks at the Stadium Series by assistant GM Jeff Gorton. He said that some issues need to be worked out (meaning $ and years) but “Henrik wants to be here and we want Henrik…at the end of the day… it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a deal….I think we will get one done." That gives me a relative sense of confidence plus Lundqvist, after lukewarm responses right after the season ended against Boston, has been fairly clear in his statements that he wants to remain in NY.

For more on my views on Lundqvist and what type of deal I believe he may get:

Clearly Quick belongs in the conversation with Hank as to the top goalie in the league but to dismiss Hank in this scenario simply because he hasn't carried his team to the finals is off base. I would point out that Hank has led his country to an Olympic gold medal while Quick has yet to backstop his country to a medal.

I don't think he was dismissing Hank at all. Simply pointing out that Eklund dismissed Quick, somewhat ridiculously. And Quick hasn't started for the US yet because he was only 23 last time around, and Thomas hadn't lost his mind yet.

If Crawford is worth 6 million per year, Lundqvist is worth 12.

Quick and Lundqvist is an interesting argument. Two goalies, pretty much near top of their games and list as to the best netminders in the league, the difference being that Quick is signed to a very friendly cap deal while Lundqvist is likely to get $7-8 mil per. Quick has a Stanley Cup and Lundqvist a Gold Medal, so can say that the battle for the net of Hank qualified to play for the US would be interesting. For Canada, I can see Crawford, Holtby and Price battling to start with Luongo and Smith having their shot dependent on how well they are playing early this season. Its hard to argue that Lundqvist would not backstop Tam Canada if he was eligible.

Maybe he wasn't dismissing Hank but I didn't think mentioning the fact he hasn't gotten the Rangers to the Finals yet wasn't as important in this discussion as Hank's Olympic success and experience. As for age, Hank was just 23 when his team won the gold in 2006. And wasn't Ryan Miller the starter for the US team in 2010?

I guess it really doesn't matter. Hank will be the starter in net for Team Sweden so any debate about where he would fit hypothetically into the Canadian or US depth chart is pointless. Particularly since the blog is supposed to be about the money Hank might earn on his next contract and that the cash isn't going to be the only factor that goes into his decision.

Maybe he's as good of a liar as Parise, and really wants to play for Sweden. Or like Koval***ker.

A bit strange considering Emery had more or less the same level of success playing behind that Hawks team as Crawford. Of course Crawford was the man between the pipes during the playoffs and Emery is gone. Still, it tells me that any number of netminders could backstop Chicago to success and there was little need to invest that much in a goaltender. I would think those resources and cap space would be better allocated elsewhere.
